Cigarettes, Toast, and Morning Praise. [Café de L’Ange Fuse Branch | Coffee Shop]

Mornings in shopping districts usually begin quietly. Fuse’s Boulandori 1st Street is no exception; the sound of shutters rising and the aroma of baking bread serve as an alarm clock. Follow that scent, and you’ll find Café de L’Ange.

Steam rising from behind the counter, butter melting onto toast, the gentle wisp of cigarette smoke. In this place where everyone’s mornings intersect, you’ll find just the right “words of praise” to spontaneously add a little something extra to your daily life.

“Louange” means “words of praise.”

店前|看板

The name of this café comes from the French word “Louange,” which means “praise” or “admiration.”

“I want this to be a place that earns praise,” says the owner with a smile. True to his words, meticulous yet unobtrusive attention to detail is evident in everything from the selection of ingredients to the presentation of each dish.

Lined up at the entrance are the shop’s house-roasted, charcoal-roasted coffee beans. It’s amazing how just that toasty aroma the moment you open the bag instantly puts your mind at ease.

The coffee, hand-dripped one cup at a time, has an exquisite balance of acidity and richness, with a flavor that feels somehow nostalgic.

Coffee is something to be savored—along with the “air” around it

ホットコーヒー

“Coffee is a delicate beverage that’s influenced by everything from the equipment and water to the atmosphere in which it’s enjoyed,”

As the master says, there is absolutely no compromise here when it comes to ingredients or the brewing process. The beans are carefully selected and roasted with meticulous care. Furthermore, unbleached filter paper is used to avoid any off-flavors in the beans.

For iced coffee, a flannel (cloth) filter is used, and each cup is hand-dripped one at a time. You can tell from the way the coffee is brewed that they cherish both time and aroma.

Is the BLT a morning treat or a quick fix?

ホットBLT三度

Rouanj’s specialty: the hot BLT sandwich.

Thick slices of triangular bread are toasted to a golden brown and filled with crisp lettuce, tomato, and thick-cut ham. It’s not an extravagant treat, but it has that “feeling of being put together” that’s perfect for the morning.

A man who looked like a regular was eating it in silence—no smartphone, no book. Just sitting there with nothing but his BLT and coffee in front of him.

There are mornings when I find myself envying that way of spending time.

Berry Berry Toast comes with a smile

ベリーベリートースト

Come the afternoon, I start craving something a little sweet. My “treat” for those moments is the Berry Berry Toast.

A sweet-and-sour berry sauce drips over chewy, thick-sliced toast. The way the cream’s smoothness blends with the toasty aroma of the bread is simply exquisite.

ベリーベリートーストのセットサラダ

But what makes me chuckle a little is that it comes with a salad.

“Huh? Isn’t this supposed to be a snack?” I say to myself, but once I take a bite, the sweet-and-salty balance becomes addictive. This little bit of “shyness” is surely part of the shop’s charm.

Even the sandwiches have their own little stories

レシート裏の記載|サンドイッチへのこだわり

L’Wanj’s sandwich menu is packed with a commitment to quality ingredients, featuring herb-seasoned chicken, homemade egg fillings, and scrambled eggs.

Every sandwich is prepared to order—nothing is made in advance. In other words, each plate carries the time spent preparing it just for you.

ミックスサンド

It’s somehow more luxurious than a mere “feast,” with a gentleness that feels like a gentle interlude in everyday life.

Beyond the smoke, you can glimpse the Osaka of yesteryear

店内の様子

It’s a “smoking-allowed” coffee shop—a rarity these days.

At Ruanju, smoking and non-smoking sections are clearly separated, and time flows peacefully in each.

As noon approaches, office workers puff on cigarettes with newspapers in hand, quietly sipping their coffee. That scene feels as though it preserves a “typical morning” from Showa-era Osaka right here and now.

禁煙スペースの卓上

Of course, those who dislike smoke need not worry. At the back of the shop, there’s a calm, non-smoking area. Here, you’ll find a woman leisurely reading a book while sipping a café au lait. Different rhythms overlap within the same space.

A Changing Town, an Unchanging Morning

The town of Fuse is also changing little by little. New cafes have opened, and more young people are around.

But there are things that remain unchanged at L’Wanj. It’s the sound of toast toasting, or the glint of the silver ashtrays lined up on the tables.

“Coming here makes me feel at ease,” someone once said, and that’s probably true.

It’s a place that adds just a little “compliment” to the town’s daily life. That’s the kind of coffee shop L’Wanjou is.
