Every time we share a dish, the place turns into a social gathering spot. [Butachinkan | Local Chinese Restaurant]
When I walk through the town of Fuse, there’s a Chinese restaurant I find myself drawn into as if by magic: “Tonchin-kan, Arakawa Branch.” The sign isn’t flashy or pretentious, but it gives off a certain sense of reassurance. As I step through the noren curtain, my eyes are immediately drawn to the business cards plastered all over the wall.
Just how many times have the people living in this town gathered here to chat, laugh, and enjoy a drink? This isn’t just a “diner”—it’s truly the “town’s social hub.” These walls have been quietly telling that story all along.

The Walls Tell the Story of the Town’s Memories

With a glass in hand, I happened to glance at the wall. As I looked at the neatly arranged business cards, something slowly began to sink in.
Each one had a name and a title—but more than that, they were filled with “connections.”

That night when I started sharing a beer here with a neighbor I’d previously only exchanged greetings with. That moment at a shopping district gathering when someone let slip their true feelings. All those little moments—they’ve surely all happened right here in this shop.

Head further inside, and you’ll find table seating on the second floor. There’s even a banquet hall on the third floor. Dinner with the kids, sports team celebrations, family gatherings—it’s not often you find a place that, before you know it, has become “the go-to spot for special occasions.”
When I feel like talking to someone, my feet naturally lead me here—and I think that’s because this place is truly “open to the community.”
The Personality Shining Through the Handwritten Menu

Another thing that leaves a lasting impression at this restaurant is the handwritten menu densely plastered on the walls.
It’s all written by the owner’s hand, and the letters have a somewhat rounded, soft quality. If you look closely, you can still see faint pencil sketches beneath the ink.
The contrast with the owner’s bold, vigorous back as he stirs the large pot makes me smile.

He’s meticulous and shy, yet he never compromises on his cooking. That personality shines through in the handwriting on the menu and the steam rising from the kitchen.
Even before I’ve taken my first bite, I’ve already grown a little fond of this place.
A night that begins with a bottle of beer

First, a bottle of beer. Kirin or Asahi? One of the great things about this place is that you can take your time with such a trivial choice.
I pop the cap and gently pour the foam. As the coldness washes down my throat, the sounds of this town fade just a little into the distance.

With a glass in one hand, I listen to the sound of something being stir-fried at the back of the counter.
People chatting, takeout orders, the sound of the TV. It all blends together just right, letting me relax.
On a night with no right answers, a dish that’s just right

None of the dishes are overly fancy, but they’re undeniably “delicious.” Crispy yet chewy gyoza, fried rice with corn.

Dan dan noodles with an exquisite balance of spice and richness; sweet and sour pork that evokes the Showa era. Small shrimp in chili sauce, coated in fluffy egg.
No matter what you choose, you definitely won’t go wrong.

But I feel like the real charm of this place lies not so much in the flavors themselves, but in the “atmosphere.” No matter what you order, it feels like the perfect choice for you right now. There’s a depth of warmth here that makes you feel that way.
Today, somewhere out there, another business card will be added to the collection.

“Tonzinkan Arakawa Branch” creates a place for everyone—whether you’re someone who just happened to drop by on a whim or a regular who’s been coming for years.
That’s surely because this restaurant isn’t just “in the neighborhood”—it’s “inside someone in the neighborhood.”

Even at this very moment, someone is drinking beer, tucking into gyoza, and weaving their own memories into the business cards on the wall.
It’s a place that’s unpretentious, down-to-earth, yet warmly welcoming. Tonchinkan is a place that shines like a beacon in the town.
