100 Dishes and Subtle Kindness [Daimaruya | Casual Izakaya]

A 7-minute walk from the station. Right in the heart of Fuse’s Brandoli 3rd Street stands “Daimaruya,” a casual pub.

It’s not flashy. Yet, strangely enough, it draws you in. Step through the noren curtain, and what awaits you is the sound of laughter—not loud, but genuine—and unassuming yet sincere gazes. The fizz in the glass, the scent of sizzling fat, and the slight distance between people. A parched heart is gently quenched. That scene continues to quietly thrive here today.

The shop curtain fluttered; it was just past 5:30 p.m.

“What time does that place open again?” By the time someone muttered that, the sky had already begun to turn indigo. At the end of Brandoli 3rd Street, we find ourselves walking there automatically, saying to each other, “It’s about time.”

The moment the noren curtain quietly rises—that instant of irresistible allure. Before we knew it, the place was packed by 6:00 p.m. No reservations, no prearranged meetups. That’s the rhythm of this town—the rhythm of Daimaruya.

The handwritten menu captures the essence of the day

Whiteboards line the wall. They’re densely covered with over 100 menu items. The handwriting isn’t particularly striking, but your eyes are naturally drawn to it.

“Quail Skewers,” “Red Sausages,” “Spinach Ohitashi”—just seeing the names brings back memories of childhood dinners, my mother’s kitchen, and the bento I ate on typhoon days.

ほうれん草のおひたし

Whether or not there’s a “specialty” doesn’t really matter. In fact, the fact that “this is always here” might be what’s truly important.

I feel a little uneasy if I can’t find it. But as long as it’s there the next time I visit, that’s enough. There’s an atmosphere here that makes me feel that way.

After the toast, the silence feels comforting

生ビール(小)

“We have Asahi Super Dry on tap.”

That single sentence posted on the wall gives me a slight sense of relief. When I take a sip from the mug, I feel my heart relax even before the fizz hits my tongue.

トンテキ

Even when the food arrives, we don’t dive right in. Someone takes a bite and gives a small nod, saying, “…Mmm.” That silence feels just right.

炙り豚足
The savory aroma of the pork trotters draws laughter from the table next to us. There’s no need to force the atmosphere—here, this is just right.

It’s surely that unassuming atmosphere that puts everyone at ease.

店内|テービル席

“There’s an empty seat over here where you can see people’s faces,” someone says—a remark exchanged quite naturally.

Regulars and first-timers alike don’t make a big deal out of socializing. Yet, someone is always quietly keeping an eye on someone else.

大丸屋|店内

On the liquor shelf are “Hakushu” and “Hibiki.” Nothing special. Just the reassuring feeling that the things you’re happy to see are right where they should be.

A baseball game is on TV. No one’s watching it seriously, but the cheers give the bar just the right rhythm. They gently fill the pauses between conversations.

Things that remained the same even after the move

Daimaruya was originally located in front of the station. Even after moving to its current location, the atmosphere remained exactly the same.

テーブル上調味料セット

On the counter, seasonings are neatly arranged on a small tray: S&B’s chili powder, Kikkoman soy sauce, and a clear salt shaker. They’re all familiar items.

Yet, for some reason, they feel like they truly “belong only here.” Even the stains on the wall seem like a testament to the time that has passed.

Gently celebrating the days when nothing happens

Nothing particularly special happens in this town or at this bar. But there are definitely nights when you find yourself thinking, “Today was a good day.” There are no flashy signs. Yet, there is a steady light.

“Daimaruya,” a neighborhood pub, is quietly letting its noren flutter in the breeze once again today, enveloped in the atmosphere of Fuse.
