“There’s a man who brings the sea home.” A night when the joy of a catch lands on your plate. [Kaze | Izakaya]
They’ve been in Fuse for over 20 years.
The owner loves fishing and heads out to sea on a whim to catch fish. On days when he catches a lot, you can even get sashimi for just one coin.
I think that kind of spontaneity is part of what makes this place so special. Seeking out dishes packed with the rich flavors of the sea, I walk through the door again today.

A local seafood restaurant started by a fishing enthusiast

The owner of this shop is a die-hard fishing enthusiast.
On his days off, he heads out to the ocean and casts his line while surrounded by the sound of the waves and the scent of the wind. On days when he has a good catch, those fish line the counter in the evening for just a coin. Yellowtail, Spanish mackerel, and hairtail—a variety of fish are on display depending on the season.
The regulars, who know this well, look forward to stepping through the noren curtain and asking, “What did you catch today?”

Every fish at this shop has a pure, honest flavor. There are moments when you quietly realize, “So this is what ‘delicious fish’ really means.” It’s less of an izakaya and more of a small fish restaurant.
Between the classics and the surprises

The sashimi platter looks different every time. That’s because they serve the very best cuts from whatever fish they have that day.

The large tsukune are also popular. With their smoky charcoal aroma and the rich umami of the meat, you won’t be able to put your chopsticks down.
And then there’s the dashimaki tamago, where the red pickled ginger stands out vividly.
Despite its adorable appearance, it has a gentle flavor with a rich dashi broth.

Here, every single dish is packed with the owner’s personal touch. Nothing flashy, but everything is made with care.
A table set with dishes like these is perfect for any kind of day.
The signature dish: “Huge Chawanmushi”

One dish you absolutely must order here is the “Giant Chawanmushi.” Just as the name suggests, it’s so big you need both hands to hold it.
Inside, you’ll find generous chunks of the day’s recommended seafood—octopus, shrimp, whitefish, and more. Take a spoonful, and the aroma of the dashi broth fills your nose, making you sigh involuntarily.
The flavor, packed with the umami of the fish, is like drinking in the sea itself.
Even the half-size portion is as substantial as a regular chawanmushi, yet before you know it, you’ll find yourself completely engrossed until the very last bite.
Today, too, I can feel the presence of the sea.

The shop has been in Fuse for over 20 years. While the street scene has changed little by little, the atmosphere here remains just as it was back then.
The laughter drifting over from the counter and the sounds of the grill—surrounded by these sounds, today’s fatigue just melts away.

When the scent of the sea suddenly tickles my nose, I realize the owner has gone fishing again.
I can picture his face as he smiles a little sheepishly, saying, “I caught a good one today.” The sound of fish being filleted, the sizzle of frying oil, and the laughter—all these sounds blend together to create the night in this town.
As I’m leaving, I say, “I’ll be back,” and he replies, “I’ll call you if I catch anything.”
Perhaps that promise is the greatest treat this shop has to offer.
