The Most Soothing Coffee in Fuse. [Café Totoro | Coffee Shop]

Just a step away from the hustle and bustle of the arcade lies Higashi-Ichijō Street. “Coffee Senka Totoro,” which I discovered at the end of an alley, feels just like a secret morning hideout in Fuse. The lower level is “Café & Light Meals Totoro,” and the upper level is “Coffee Senka Totoro.”This café, with its two names, exuded a gentle, homey atmosphere that chain stores simply can’t replicate.
The eggs on the morning set menu, the aroma of coffee wafting up with the steam, and a friendly word from the owner—spending time here reminds me once again of the unhurried feel of a leisurely morning.

A Warm Greeting at a Morning Coffee Shop

“Alone? Please have a seat at the counter.” When greeted by a voice like that in the early morning, before my body has fully woken up, my tension suddenly melts away.

At the counter, a regular is flipping through a newspaper. At a table, a group of ladies are sharing a sandwich. Though conversation is sparse, they blend seamlessly into the atmosphere.

The toasty aroma of toast, rising steam, and soft light—I feel as though they’re slowly seeping into the very core of my being.

A dark brown sofa, a black table worn smooth from years of use. A vase by the wall, old magazines, and cups packed tightly on the shelf at the back of the counter. Each has been gently polished by time, giving them just the right “worn-in” look.

In this space of about 10 tatami mats, the unpretentious beauty of everyday life breathes freely.

It might just be “the best coffee in Fuse”

“The best coffee in Fuse”—a small sign at the entrance reads just that. Probably, someone said it, and they just put it up as is. It doesn’t need any proof.

The sight of Mama carefully dripping each cup one by one after taking an order. The sound of hot water pouring slowly and smoothly from the silver pot. I find myself captivated by the aroma wafting through the air and the rhythm of her movements.

It’s not about which coffee tastes better or worse. It’s the emotional satisfaction of knowing that “someone is truly taking the time to care for you.” A cup of coffee here felt like a “talisman that soothes the soul.”

Breakfast is a microcosm of a gentle way of life

That day’s breakfast consisted of an egg sandwich, fruit, and a soft-boiled egg. “Here you go,” she said with a smile as she handed me the tray—it was packed with just the right amount for a perfect morning.

The menu changes slightly every day—sandwiches, hot sandwiches, ham toast, French toast… There are people who look forward to their “usual flavor” for each day of the week.

“If you’re alone, you’ll end up with leftover ingredients, right?” That kind of reasoning fits perfectly into the rhythm of the town.

Regulars come by looking forward to just that. More than just the food itself, they’re surely happy to know that “it’s still there, just the same as always.”

Conversation, nutrition, a sense of security. This shop’s breakfast menu unobtrusively provided everything necessary for daily life.

“Are you open every day?”

A board listed the breakfast menu for each day of the week: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun. Wait—there’s no closed day.

“I take two or three days off once in a while, but basically, no. If I close up, people say, ‘There’s nowhere to go today!’” the owner said with a laugh.

Those were such heartwarming words, they almost brought tears to my eyes. She takes on the responsibility of being a “safe haven” for others with such lighthearted grace.

Just how meaningful is it for this town that she “keeps the shop open”? Mama surely knows that firsthand.

At lunchtime, you can rediscover nostalgic flavors

Morning slowly comes to an end, and eventually, the scent of lunch begins to waft through the air. Today, I’m in the mood for omurice. From the kitchen, I can hear the sizzle of oil.

What was served was a dish with a slightly torn, thin omelet on top—something that felt strangely nostalgic. The rice might be frozen. The omelet isn’t perfectly shaped either. But that’s what makes it good. In fact, I almost wish it were exactly like that.

Curry rice, spaghetti, sandwiches—they aren’t fancy dishes, but they’re all flavors that make you feel like you’ve “come home.” There’s a sense of security here, just like being at Grandma’s house in the countryside.

The Morning I Went to See the French Toast

Glancing at the menu, I realize that tomorrow is the day for my favorite dish: “French toast.” Suppressing my excitement, I ask, “Will 11:00 a.m. still be okay?”

“I’ll make it for you even if you’re a little late,” Mom says with a smile.

That one sentence made me so happy, and my heart suddenly felt lighter. Sometimes, even the smallest act of thoughtfulness can change the whole mood of your day.

That’s why I thought to myself, “I’ll get up early tomorrow.” There aren’t many coffee shops that make me feel this way.

The watchful kindness poured into every cup

“The best coffee in Fuse”—behind those words, I sense not a spirit of competition, but a quiet promise to the town: “As long as this place is here, everything will be okay.”

I’m sure this shop is gently embracing someone’s daily life today, just as it always does. With its aroma, warmth, and casual conversation, it helps ease away any feelings of urgency.

Enveloped in the aroma of coffee, my heart simply softens. This shop offers moments like that.
