Steam rising from the siphon and the red sofa in the morning. [Café Holland | Coffee Shop]
Tucked away in a back alley in Fuse, “Café Holland” stands open as if to embrace the morning light. Just as the siphon begins to gurgle, the interior is filled with the interplay of reddish-brown sofas and soft voices. The stillness before time begins to move, and gentle conversation.
With just coffee and the morning air, I’m sure today will be all right. This is a place to gather my thoughts in the morning.

Drawn by a Subtle Sign

I headed down Fuse Shijo Street toward the side streets. A short walk from the station, my eyes fell on the words “Café Holland” on a purplish sign. Its slightly faded appearance strangely lingered in my mind.

Through the glass facing the street, warm morning light streams in, softly illuminating the outline of the café. Though there are no large signs or decorations, standing in front of the shop, I feel as if I’m being quietly welcomed inside.
The Red Sofa and Morning Memories

The moment you open the door, that red sofa leaps into view. The deeply worn leather, having absorbed the memories of those who’ve sat there over the years, continues to cradle someone’s back even today.

The banister bathed in soft light, the coffee tickets arranged in a slightly haphazard line. Everything is just a little imperfect—and that’s precisely why it feels so strangely comforting.
The Time the Syphon Wakes Up

When I place my order, the siphon at the back counter begins to make a sound. A soft “pock-pock” echoes through the still-quiet shop, and just that alone makes the morning air feel a little clearer.

A toasty aroma spreads along with the steam. Enveloped by the sounds and scents of the coffee brewing, even the hustle and bustle of daily life gradually begins to unravel.
The Gentleness of Coffee That Soaks Into the Morning

“It’s a bit strong, but I think it’s perfect for the morning,” the owner says with a smile. Indeed, while it has a robust depth, it leaves a surprisingly gentle aftertaste.

Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala. With several varieties of beans to choose from, even your usual cup offers a little something different. For each one, the word “soothing” fits better than “delicious.”
A morning treat: a quiet breakfast table
Toast, sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs. None of them are flashy, yet they truly satisfy both your stomach and your soul.

Apparently, some people even order cream soda first thing in the morning. The green fizz and the ice cream floating on top—it’s a drink that makes you feel just a little bit indulgent. It reminds you that it’s okay to spend your mornings freely, at your own pace.
Amid the morning quiet, a single conversation

Some people are reading the newspaper, others have finished and just left it on the table, and still others are silently sipping their coffee.
It’s quiet, but there’s definitely a human presence in the shop, and the occasional exchanges—like “It’s a bit chilly today, isn’t it?” or “It rained yesterday, didn’t it?”—suddenly warm the atmosphere.
It’s not bustling. But you’re definitely not alone.
The luxury of the morning, courtesy of a shop that closes at 2:00 p.m.

This shop, which closes in the afternoon, cherishes the “ordinary moments” from morning through noon.
You come in intending to have breakfast, and before you know it, it’s almost noon. It feels good to let time flow naturally like that. This shop has an atmosphere of new beginnings. It’s a place where you can start a new day at your own pace.
Beyond the steam lies an unchanging morning

When a customer says, “I’ll be back,” the owner smiles and replies, “Take care.” Before you know it, this daily routine becomes a cherished part of the scenery.
Beyond the steam rising from the siphon, the same morning awaits today as well. Just sitting on the red sofa and waiting for my coffee is enough. This is a place where I can truly feel that way.
