Hideo Nomo’s Former Batterymate’s “Jumbo” Love [Hamafuku Sushi | Sushi]
As you step through the noren curtain, a warm smile greets you from across the counter. “Hamafuku Sushi,” located in the old downtown district of Fuse, is a sushi restaurant with a slightly mysterious yet warm atmosphere.
The jumbo-sized sushi is certainly a surprise, but I wonder why—after I finish eating, I always feel a sense of calm. It’s the kind of place that’s steeped in the atmosphere of this neighborhood and the chef’s warm personality.

A Slightly Playful Sushi Restaurant Behind the Noren

“Hamato Sushi” comes into view as soon as you turn into the alley just off Brandoli 1-chome.
Mr. Hamada has been running this shop—first in Tamatsukuri for 20 years, then in Fuse for another 20.Before he knew it, he’d been keeping the shop’s legacy alive for nearly 40 years.

Step through the noren curtain to find counter and table seating. People who appear to be regulars are quietly sipping sake and nibbling on sushi. There’s also seating in the back, making it a great spot for families.
Generous Portions You Can’t Finish in One Bite

The specialty is “Jumbo Sushi.”Each piece of seasonal fish is shaped into a size that’s simply impossible to eat in a single bite.

In fact, even the regular-sized pieces are large—think unagi-cucumber rolls that spill over the edge and rich, fatty tuna.
It’s not just about the size, though. Every piece is genuinely delicious. You can eat until you’re full, have a glass of beer, and it’ll cost you around 3,000 yen—a price that fits right in with everyday life in Fuse.
The Story of Hideo Nomo and the Head Chef

The walls inside the restaurant are decorated with many photos.
If you look closely, you’ll see a young Mr. Hamada standing side by side with Hideo Nomo.Apparently, back when he played corporate league baseball, he was Nomo’s catcher.

“This is the chef’s restaurant—he used to be Nomo’s catcher!”Rumors like that spread, and for a while, the number of customers increased. But that’s not the only reason the place has remained bustling for 20 years.
It’s because the chef’s sincerity shines through in everything—from the conversations across the counter to the taste of the sushi.
The Reason for the Size

“Why are they so big?”When I asked him that, the chef smiled shyly and replied, “Because it makes our customers happy.”
It’s not about flashy customer service.I think it’s a desire to quietly brighten someone’s day—and that sentiment is what manifests as these generous portions.
There are even regulars who come twice a week. Both the size of the sushi and the chef’s personality continue to bring vitality to the town of Fuse.
